From legacy to living institution
BATMU is the result of a vision shaped across generations. This timeline records the people, prayers, partnerships and progress bringing that vision to life.
A Legacy Begins
Abel Tendekayi Muzorewa was born at Old Mutare Mission Hospital in Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. Born prematurely, his survival was uncertain. He later credited Swedish missionary nurse Sister Ellen Björklund with helping to save his life. From those humble beginnings emerged a servant of God, educator, church leader and statesman whose legacy would inspire Bishop A.T. Muzorewa University.
A Historic Consecration
Bishop Abel Tendekayi Muzorewa was consecrated as the first African bishop of The United Methodist Church in Rhodesia, a defining milestone in the history of both the Church and the nation.
The BATMEF Foundation
During the celebration of his 60 years in ministry, Bishop Muzorewa established the Bishop A.T. Muzorewa Evangelism Foundation to carry forward his commitment to evangelism and service. Guided by “the whole gospel for the whole person,” BATMEF advanced education, leadership development, healthcare and humanitarian service. This vision later gave birth to BATMU.
A Legacy Nationally Recognized
The Second Republic of Zimbabwe formally recognized Bishop Muzorewa’s life, legacy and contribution to the nation. The occasion prompted the Muzorewa family to consider how his legacy could serve future generations. From that reflection emerged the vision for Bishop A.T. Muzorewa University: transforming a celebrated legacy into a living institution.
A Future Home for BATMU
BATMU Chairman Ernest Muzorewa and Dr Henry Gwinyai Muzorewa met Chief Tandi and community representatives in the Rusape area to discuss land for the proposed university. The engagement opened the path toward establishing a permanent home for BATMU in Manicaland.

A Vision Consecrated in Prayer
A prayer vigil was held at the proposed BATMU site to thank God for the land and the university vision. Chairman Ernest Muzorewa joined community leaders and residents in prayer, thanksgiving and dedication, committing the land and BATMU’s future to God.
The Inaugural BATMU Fundraiser
BATMEF held the inaugural BATMU fundraising event at Holiday Inn Mutare. Government officials, community leaders, supporters and friends of the Muzorewa legacy gathered to mobilize support for the university. Hon. Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, Minister of Defence, served as Guest of Honour, with Hon. M. Mugadza, Minister of State for Manicaland Province, among the distinguished guests.
The Second BATMU Fundraising Dinner
A second fundraising dinner at Meikles Hotel in Harare expanded national support for the university. An address from His Excellency President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa was delivered on his behalf by Hon. Professor Paul Mavima, Minister of Skills Audit and Development. The gathering brought leaders, partners and supporters together around BATMU’s mission.
Upcoming milestones
The BATMU Vision Takes Architectural Form
BATMU’s proposed architectural plans translate the university vision into an early campus concept, providing a visual representation of the facilities and infrastructure envisioned for the institution. Led by Maxwell Muzorewa, this milestone marks the transition from vision and planning toward a physical university campus.
Pegging of the Land
A professional land surveyor is expected to begin the official pegging of the proposed university site. Surveying and boundary markers will define the land designated for the future campus and establish a foundation for the next stages of development.
This timeline will continue to grow as planning, partnerships, site development and construction move BATMU closer to opening its doors.
